ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY

ACT helps clients address maladaptive behaviors. Many of these behaviors are an attempt to avoid some of the symptoms of stress, such as negative thoughts or bodily sensations (Hayes, Wilson, Gifford, Follette, & Strosahl, 1996).  ACT teaches acceptance and provides mindfulness exercises to help clients notice these negative thoughts and/or sensations and to accept them for what they are, just thoughts!  This often eliminates the constant battle with them.  Finally, ACT helps the clients  focus on engaging in behaviour and taking committed action that produces outcomes that align with their personal values.
